Stonemason Jim Willis, apprenticeship near done, finds himself drawn into the factory of William Foster & Co alongside elder brother George. Foster’s are building the first tanks, answer perhaps – and perhaps not – to the horrors of trench warfare. Inexorably the brothers move South to Suffolk for training and on to Picardy. Discharged wounded and back in Lincoln, Jim must choose: stone or metal, mason or mechanic?
